Frequently Asked Questions

I received a request to sign a contract for Steno. What is this, and why do I need to sign it?

Steno’s Standard Videographer Agreement is a standard legal contract that outlines how we’ll work together when you take on videography jobs for Steno. It ensures we’re on the same page and protects both sides.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • You’re an independent contractor, not a Steno employee. You can still work with other clients.

  • There’s no commitment to accept jobs – you can say no, and we’re not obligated to send them. But if you accept a job, the contract terms apply.

  • You’ll invoice Steno after completing the job, and we’ll pay you within 30 days of receiving the final materials.

  • You can use subcontractors, but you are responsible for their work and professionalism.

  • Steno owns the final deliverables – you can’t reuse or share any materials created for us.

  • Keep everything confidential, including case info, client details, and sensitive documents (especially anything medical).

    • As part of Steno’s SOC 2 Type 2 compliance, all independent videographers who work with us must agree to strict security and confidentiality standards.

Completing this contract is required before we can begin assigning jobs to you. The contract helps protect both Steno and its contractors by avoiding future misunderstandings or disputes.

If you have questions or need a portion of the standard contract amended, please email us at concierge@steno.com.

How long will the contract be in effect once signed?

The contract lasts one year and then continues month-to-month unless canceled in writing by either side.

Does Steno provide training for legal videographers?

Steno does not put our contractors through the same training program as we do our employees. However, we may offer our independent contractors training sessions and materials upon request. One of Steno’s core values is to “constantly innovate,” we’ve done just that with our flagship products like the Steno Connect App for Zoom and Transcript Genius.

  • We offer one-on-one training sessions to learn how the Steno Connect App for Zoom works and how you may interact with it as a legal videographer contracting with Steno.
    • If you want to learn more about this product or others, please email us at concierge@steno.com.
  • There may be times when Steno sends our contractors specialized video and audio equipment kits when our clients request them.
    • In these instances, you must meet with someone from our Tech Team to ensure you know how to use the equipment and to confirm that nothing is missing from your kit.
  • Steno maintains a help center specifically for our independent videographer contractors. Once you have been onboarded, you will receive access to those articles.
